Biography

Robert L. Ross, The Ross Family of New Jersey:[1]

6. GEORGE ROSS, birth date unknown. It has been said that he was born 5-13-1662 in New Haven, Conn, but that is an error as it is the date his older brother John was baptized. It is more likely he was born after 1670 in Elizabethtown, N.J.
He was on Rev. Harrimans salary list in 1696/7, although his father and two older brothers were on the list in 1694.[2] 1696/7 might thus be indicative of his date of majority. Also the later birth date would be more in keeping with the birth date of his children between 1698 and 1717.
His wife's name was Hannah and some say a daughter of Humphrey Spinning.
His will was dated 10-26-1717 and proved 11-14-1717.

Children

He had nine children:[1]

  • 20. John. b. 1698.
  • 21. Thomas. b.1700.
  • 22. Abigail b. ca 1703.
  • 23. George b. 1705
  • 24. Sarah b. ca 1708
  • 25. William b. October 1710
  • 26. Samuel b. 1712
  • 27. Hannah.
  • 28. Child b. 1717-18. George Ross in his will of 1717 mentions his wife Hannah as being pregnant.

Public Protests

George was part of a protest movement by Elizabethtown citizens against the rule of the New Jersey Lords Proprietors, which led to revocation of their governing powers in 1702.

In probably 1697 he signed a petition to the King, along with 64 others from Elizabethtown, asking to be placed under jurisdiction of the Province of New York, since New Jersey judges were appointed by the Proprietors and not impartial in legal disputes with the freeholders. Note: Whitehead (125n) says that the petition is "presumed to have been transmitted about 1696"; Pomfret says it must have been 1697.[3]

On 10 Sep.1700 George was among about 60 men from Elizabethtown who appeared at the Essex County Court and challeged their authority. When the Court dismissed their complaints, the protest quickly turned violent. A constable was "pulled by the haire" and thrown out the door. The presiding judge was pulled from the bench and his wig was yanked off. Other judges had "their clothes torn of their backs." Fifty individuals, including George Ross Jr., are named in the court minutes and a grand jury was impaneled for an indictment.[4] But the case apparently was mooted when the Proprietary Courts were dissolved.

Will and Estate

Abstract of will:[5]

1717 Oct. 26. Ross, George, of Elizabeth Town, Essex Co., yeoman; will of. Wife Hannah. Children — John, Thomas, Abigail, Sarah, George, William, Samuel, and expected child. House and lot, land, bought of Derrick Baker. Personal property. Executor — brother-in-law Daniel Price. Witnesses — Samuel Whitehead, Daniel Ross, Hannah Lambert. Proved November 14, 171 7. Lib. A, p. 86
1717 Nov. 13. Daniel Price refuses to act as executor.
1722 May 16. Ross, George and Sarah, elect as their guardian James Hampton of Elizabeth town, to whom letters of guardianship are given. Lib. A, p. 236

Ross, Ross Family:[1]

From the estate records it appears his wife and some of his children died soon after his death. The estate, over 500 pound, was large for its day. There are over 175 people named in his estate, making it almost a mini-census of Elizabethtown in 1717. He calls himself a yeoman and, from the large number of debtors to his estate, he could have been a store keeper (his inventory includes a parcel of shop goods) or even a money lender. In a document dated 5-28-1725 it appears that part of his estate was embezzled.

Just a note that while Ross, Robert L. The Ross Family of New Jersey: A Record of the Descendants of George and Constance (Little) Ross ~and~ Other New Jersey Ross Families. Baltimore: Gateway Press (1990) appears to be well researched, it gives no sources for its information and so it will help if the information it gives can be corroborated by primary sources in order to meet WikiTree pre-1700 guidelines.

Ross-2791 and Ross-4947 appear to represent the same person because: try this merge again now that one profile Ross-2791 is orphaned

I stand corrected on Ross-2792...I finally have seen in another source in which was stated he had been a deacon.

Ross-2791 and Ross-4947 are not ready to be merged because: I believe there is too much conflicting information to merge Ross-2791 and Ross-4947. Ross-4947 is well cited, while Ross-2791 is a Gedcom. Ross-4947 was not born in Scotland. He was born "more likely in Elizabethtown, N.J." That is a continent apart. Ross-4947 had no suffix. Ross-4947 did not die in Virginia and probably never traveled there. The will of Ross-4947 was proved in 1717 Elizabethtown, NJ proving his was dead well before Ross-2791's death in 1754. Having done extensive research into the Ross-4947 lineage, it appears that Ross-2791 is a conglomeration of several George Rosses. Adding to that situation, the father of Ross-4947 is Ross-2792, however Ross-2792 was not a deacon; another unrelated George Ross who immigrated to Delaware was Deacon George Ross. This creates a problem in my tree because I cannot accept the errors and link father-mother-son because it would be perpetuating a huge error. The descendents of George and Constance Little Ross are extremely complicated and merging two individuals because they have the same name is not genealogically acceptable.
