1787 - Entered Princeton as a freshman - got into a few scrapes and left prematurely.
Returned to Philadelphia and became a merchant. The family were in financial difficulties and Charles became the sole supporter of his mother and unmarried sister Margaret. He made about six trips to Canton, China.
1794 - Joined the First Troop of the Philadelphia City Cavalry as a private eventually promoted to Captain. A toast of the First Troop of the Philadelphia City Cavalry still is use is "To the memory of Captains Ross, Butler and James"
Charles Ross never married.
He is buried in the graveyard of Pine Street Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia
