The News-Review, Roseburg, Oregon, 6 August, 1998 Katharine Elizabeth Ross Wilbur WILBUR, Katherine Elizabeth Ross – Age 101, of Roseburg passed away on Sunday August 2, 1998. She was born May 25, 1897 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania to Marcus H. and Catherine E. (McHale) Ross. Miss Ross attended and graduated from Moravian Parochial School in 1915. She attended and graduated in 1918 with a BA from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Miss Ross taught at the Penn School from 1918 until 1924 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. On June 23, 1934 she married Ira G. Ross Jr. who preceded her in death in 1969. The Ross' were instrumental in starting Senior Services in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Ross worked Bethlehem Steel for four month during World War I and during World War II from 1941-1946. She taught at the Durham School in Durham, Pennsylvania from 1946 until 1955. From 1955 until her retirement in 1973, she taught at the Springfield Township School. On December 18, 1976 she married John W. Wilbur, who also preceded her in death in 1985. Mrs. Wilbur did excellent needlepoint and fancy embroidery. She was also a classical pianist. Mrs. Wilbur was a member of the Grace Moravian Church in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania and also attended Central Moravian Church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. She was a member of the National Geographic Society since 1918. Mrs Wilbur moved from Springtown, Pennsylvania in 1992 to be with her daughter in Roseburg. Survivors include her daughters Mary J. Ross Matson, M.D., of Roseburg and Shirley L. Ross Thompson, RN of West Bradywine, Pennsylvania; grandchildren her honor Cheryl L. Pollak, Mollie E Chandler PhD, M. D.and Douglas M. Matson PhD; great-grandchildren William D. Pollak, Derek R. Pollak, Robert K. Pollak, Caitlin A. Matson, Malia E. Matson and Ross P. Matson. Mrs. Wilbur was also preceded in death by sisters Edith Reichel and Adelaide I. Wilson and brothers Herbert J Ross and Marcus H. Ross Jr. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Grace Moravian Church in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania. Private cremation rites have been held. Private inurnment will be in the Niskey Hill Cemetery in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
