On 14 September 1899, Arthur, a 30 year old bachelor master mariner, married Edith Minnie Stothert, a 25 year old spinster, at St John the Baptist, Atherton, Lancashire, England. Edith was the daughter of Richard Stothert, a manufacturing chemist.[1] The ceremony was performed by William Nuttall, Vicar, with witnesses George Rostron, James Rostron, Beatrice Rostron, M. E. He served on numerous Cunard Line ships, and he became captain of the RMS Carpathia on 18 January 1912. In that capacity, he directed the rescue of over 700 survivors of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on 15 April 1912.
