Herman Roth was born in Szanto, (now Abaujszanto) Hungary, in 1874 son of Ignatz Roth and Sallie Roth, and was eight years old when he arrived in New York with his parents. He grew up in Manhattan and was a law student in 1897 when he vouched for and witnessed the naturalization petition of his uncle, Aaron Roth, and was an attorney with an office in Manhattan, when he vouched for his wife's uncle, Abraham Sonnenstrahl, who applied for passport in 1906. Herman and his family moved across the river to New Jersey and lived at Jersey City from about 1916 to 1930, when they purchased a home on 85th Street in a new development in Jackson Heights, Queens. Herman was a practicing attorney with an office in Manhattan up until shortly before his untimely death when struck by a car in 1946. He was described as a kind and gentle man by his children, who said that unlike many lawyers who became quite wealthy, to the disappointment of his wife's family, he never became wealthy because he was always willing to help those who were unable to pay for his services.
