Bernath Roth was born at Györke, Hungary (now Durkov, Slovakia) about 1815, and as was customary he had a Hebrew name, a Yiddish name as well as a secular Hungarian name. His Hebrew name was Ber, his Yiddish name, Bertlan and his Hungarian name was Bernath. Bertlan may have been married twice, but the only known wife is Tereza (Resa, Rifka), married about 1842. They were living at Rozgony, Hungary (now Rozhanovce, Slovakia) in 1848 and by 1857, were at Kassa Ujfalu, (now Kosicka Nova Ves, Slovakia). All three of these towns are within a ten mile radius, near the present-day city of Kosice, Slovakia (Hungarian name Kassa, German name, Kaschau). Aaron Roth gave his parents names as "Bernhard Roth and Theresa Warssman" when he married in 1893 and the informant for Sallie Roth's death certificate gave her father's name as "Bernard," the anglicized version of the Hungarian name, Bernath. Children of Bertlan and Tereza with ages as they appear in the 1848 Hungarian census are: Israel, 8; Anna, 5; Samu, 3; and Leopold, 6m. Names and year of birth of children Bernath and "Rozalie" in the 1857 census: Israel, 1836, Fanni (Anna?), 1844: Sali, 1856. Several of their children obviously died in the interim and two sons, Ignatz, born 1861; Aaron, born 1867 and a daughter, Marie, born 1872, were born after the 1857 census and are only known from American records.
