Carl George Roth was born 1883 in Guernsey, Poweshiek, Iowa to parents Henry and Caroline (Schuster) Roth. He grew up in Lincoln Township, Iowa Co., Iowa and married Margaret Kathryn Mohr in 1906. They raised their children in Lincoln and removed to Oskaloosa by 1940. He made a living as a farmer and an auto mechanic. After World War II, some of their children moved to Santa Cruz, California, and Carl also moved there with his wife. He died there in 1950.
Various records refer to him as either Charles or Carl. The records from before his 1906 marriage record him as Karl or Carl, including christening, U.S. census and Iowa state census records.[2][3][4] After his marriage, records refer to him as Charles or Carl. Newell Carl George Roth's delayed birth record identifies his father as Charles George Roth.[5] All of the U.S. census records from 1910 - 1940 identify him as Charles or Charley.[6][7][8][9] His marriage and World War I draft records show him as Carl, whereas his death records identify him as Charles.[10][11][12]
This profile reports his proper first name as Carl per his christening record, the 1895 Iowa census and the 1900 U.S. census because this name most likely represents the given name intended by his parents. This interpretation is supported by the obituary of his mother, Caroline (Shuster) Roth, which identifies her son as, "Carl (known as Charlie)".[1]
