Controversy surrounding her marriage with William Whaley

URL: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/WHALEY/2000-10/0971712642 From: RLNSD@aol.com Subject: [WSP] William Whaley and Hannah Brewton data Date: Mon, 16 Oct 2000 12:10:42 EDT Dear Sue Lloyd--I received your query for information about the *Peppers* line. You said that a Hannah Whaley married a Peppers. John Peppers married *Hester/Esther Whaley* 9-14-1770 and she was daughter of William Whaley and Hannah Brewton. Our data re this Pepper family is rather sparse but we can share with you... You referred to William as * William J. Whaley, b abt. 1750 MD, died 1795, Greene Co married Hannah Round(s) or Brewton.* No records that we found show William using a middle initial or name. There is no firm date for his birth, but we agree it was PROBABLY MD or DE. William willed a feather bed to his son Daniel that he had *purchased from Benjamin Vinson.* We know about where Benjamin Vinson lived in MD. And YES, there is confusion about William's wife's maiden name. We have done research--a notebook full--trying to find a record of his marrying a ROUND. Someone even gave a marriage date in the Buckingham Church in MD. We found NO record of the marriage but found the Rounds belonged to the St. Martin's Church. We have two documents that say Hannah was a Brewton. (Also spelled BRAWTON, BROUGHTON, BRATON, etc.) One is a journal by her grandson and he says "My grandfather William Whaley married Hannah Brawton." The other document says that in 1805 she was in Jackson Co and was called *Hannah, widow of William, NEE Brewton.* Now NEE is the maiden name for a female and never changes. Therefore we refer to her as Hannah Brewton. In the 1930s a descendant referred to her as Hannah POUND. We feel that Hannah MAYBE returned from Jackson Co to Greene Co after 1805 and PERHAPS she married a second time to a POUND. No proof ! There were Pounds in that area at that time, however. We have met Zelda, to whom you referred, and she and two of her cousins now have our book, 'The Early Georgia Whaleys, a Closer Look.' This book is documented material gathered by Whaley genealogist Jackie Weeden. I helped some with my line, which is Nathaniel and Agnes____ of Early Georgia. Nathaniel seems to have been close to William, but was much younger. He could not have been a son, not likely a brother, but MAYBE a nephew or cousin. At any rate, Nathaniel witnessed William's will and was one who helped with the inventory after his death. AND then it seemed that no matter where Nathaniel and his descendants went, there were always some of William and Hannah's kin 'down the road a piece' even as they went to AL, LA, AR, and CA. Our book gives MUCH data about William and Hannah and their family, especially sons Eli, William and Samuel. Some data is given for Hester, Mary, Daniel and Elizabeth. I hope this helps some with your questions. I can attach what we have for the Peppers, and also the Family Group Sheet for William and Hannah Brewton. From: RLNSD@aol.com Subject: [WHALEY] William Whaley and Hannah Brewton rebuttal Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2006 14:23:44 EST To you all, especially descendants of William and Hannah of GA.

I have worked with Jackie Weeden, Whaley genealogist since 1989 or so and have been taught that sources must be provided for statements made and the sources should not be twisted and inserts made to them to make them agree with what the researcher wants to say. In this case, I suspect that wanting to descend from an illustrious family has colored the thinking of a researcher.

The ROUND theory is a familiar one. In the 1990s Jackie and I corresponded with a researcher who descends from William and Hannah. I will refer to this researcher as "X" for reasons of privacy. X and Jackie and I exchanged materials and things went well for a while until X discovered a will by James Round wherein James mentioned a teen- aged daughter HANNAH. So X stated, "Aha, that is who married William Whaley." X gave a marriage place and date, even though there are no records.

We stated that a document "Information of Family Heads 1805 GA" by Joseph T. Maddox stated "Jackson Co, Hannah Whaley, widow of William was nee Brewton." X replied that the statement meant that Hannah Round married a Brewton before she married Whaley. NO. Nee means married name, so Hannah was born a Brewton. (There are various spellings of Brewton.)

We stated that Samuel Betts Jones, grandson of William and Hannah stated in his Journal that Hannah's maiden name was Brawton. X replied that the Journal was written several years after William and Hannah's deaths and therefore, Samuel would not know his grandmother's maiden name, as most grandchildren don't. We disagreed with that statement, also.

I spent a lot of time ... in Salt Lake City trying to find info regarding Hannah Round. There was NO record--the church where the mythical marriage of Hannah Round to William Whaley took place was the Buckingham Presbyterian Church of Berlin, MD, according to X. There is no record of marriages, there. According to WHALEYVILLE by Arthur B. Cozzens the church in that location there was Methodist. The Whaleys who came to GA were mostly Baptists. The Queen of England presented the Buckingham church with a silver service. Would the Whaleys associate themselves with a Royalty backed church after the first Whaleys fled to America to escape the wrath of the King of England???

I have Family Group Sheets prepared by X mentioned above and the above statements giving the ROUND theory are there.

The material I received in Dec. 2006 says William was born about 1750 in Sinepuxent, Worcester Co , MD. There is NO record {for} his birth date or place. His parents are unknown. There were so many Williams and Nathaniels and Edwards it seems impossible to determine parentage.

The material states that THIS William served in the Rev. War from VA. In 1934 William T. Whaley of Sparta, GA wrote to the War. Dept. trying to find if his great great grandfather William Whaley, who died 1795 in GA had served in the Rev. War. The answer to him indicated that it was NOT his ancestor who had served from VA. The VA William Whaley had enlisted from Loudoun Co, VA, had served in various companies, applied for a pension on Sept. 11, 1818 at the age of 64 years and had died Aug. 14, 1824 in KY. His identification # was s.37632. The William Whaley in GA died in 1795!!!

In 1940 Lula Reed Boss of Maysville KY also wrote to the War Dept requesting info on the VA William Whaley. She was sent the same info as in the paragraph above.

A book, written by Rosenberg, p. 591 listed below: 'Descendants of James Burden 1740-1806, James Whaley 1684-1759 Henry Talbott 1745-1819' by Karl Rosenberg, 1982, gives info on the VA William Whaley. It indicated the names of his parents and grandparents and states that he did not marry. Is this enough proof?

Maybe someone should contact the War. Dept. to see what THEY come up with. If there is any proof THIS GA WILLIAM WHALEY served in the Rev. War, let me know.

I have had difficulty getting up enough nerve to write the above reply, but I know it MUST be done. Weeden and I have tried before and have had some success changing some people's minds. We have been called names but she has the records--I relay them to others.

I will write another article re these problems in which I will try to give some corrections and further info, especially re Hannah Brewton, the gutsy lady who deserves to be written in history the correct way.

If you wish to see Weeden's material, we still publish the GA Whaley book. Ruby L. Nelson rlnsd@aol.com
