Biography

Jesse Rountree was born about 1720 in Chowan County, North Carolina, the son of Francis Rountree who died in 1734. Jesse married between about 1742 and 1750 to Rachel, reportedly a Spivey. They lived in Bertie and Beaufort Counties, then moved to Pitt County after its creation on 1 January 1761.

On 9 April 1770, Jesse Rountree received two North Carolina land patents in Craven County totalling 550 acres on Little Contentnea Creek. [1] On 25 October 1774, Jesse Rountree still resided in Pitt County, for he sold a 150-acre tract of land on Upper Horse Pen Branch in Maul's Neck. [2]

Soon afterwards, Jesse and Rachel moved to Craven County, for on 1 April 1776, Jesse Rountree "of the County of Craven" purchased a 351-acre tract of land in Craven County from Thomas Manning. [3] Then on 7 August 1776, Jesse and Rachel Rountree of Craven County sold Randol McDonald a 170-acre tract of land in Pitt County. In this transaction, Rachel had to relinquish her dower in the land, unlike previous land sales that Jesse had made:

"Furthermore I Rachel Roundtree the wife of the sd. Jessee Roundtree do hereby Relinquish Make Over & deliver Unto him the sd. Randol McDoald his heirs, Ex. Or., or assigns forever all my right of dower & power of third to his & their only proper use forever." [4]

Jesse Rountree wrote his will on 17 October 1777, naming his five children and his wife, but he did not mention Rachel by name. Her son and son-in-law, John Rountree and John Frizzle, filed the will in Craven County Court on 21 November 1777. [5]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jesse by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jesse:

Roundtree-332 and Rountree-1044 appear to be the same person on the surface because the have the same birth year/place and death year/place but they have different spouses and children listed. I wonder if one has the incorrect birth/death date and place.
Rountree-958 and Roundtree-76 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same man, even though the family name was Rountree. not Roundtree.
