Meredith Rountree was a Master Mariner - he was the pilot at Mokau, Taranaki for some time and involved with coastal shipping. [2] He was Master of the schooner Herald[3]
Captain Meredith Rountree who died at Auckland last week at the age of 68, was a popular figure in coastal and intercolonial shipping for the past half-century. He was born at Portadown, county Armagh Ireland and arrived in Auckland with his parents in the sailing ship Portland in 1863. In 1882 he qualified as master and entered the intercolonial and coastal trade. He had command of various vessels but maintained partiality for sailing ships. During the eight months before the illness whichproved fatal, he held the position of pilot at Mokau. Captain Rountree was the only surviving son of the late Mr. Meredith Rountree of Mangapai, North Auckland. He leaves a widow and two daughters - Miss Rountree and Mrs. Edgar Palgrave Davy.
Captain Meredith Rountree lived near Northcote wharf: an early skipper for the Northcote and Ponsonby Ferry Co. [1]
