FABLE/STORY: What is the meaning of the Rowntree name, and when was it first used? In most genealogical or surname studies it is said to mean 'Dweller under the Rowan tree', and is also said to be Viking in origin, but it was almost certainly in England that the name, as we know it, was first used. It is known that the Rowan tree was sacred to the Vikings.

It comes down thru very old Rountree family stories, written down in the 1800s (by a Springfield MO founder Joseph Rountree), that the name ROUNTREE comes from Britain, ROWANTREE: Accordingly, an infant was found under a ROWAN TREE during the War of the Roses, kept by the wealthy landowner-Lord, and named MOSES ROWANTREE. His descendants came to America, and the name transformed into ROUNTREE very early on, possibly in the late 1600s. This Joseph Rountree was an intelligent seems to be a well-educated man, and he has quite a Life to his credit. I myself take his account of the Family origins as generally accepted Truth. ALSO: We have met African-American ROUNDTREE genealogists who mentioned they surmised that their ancestors had been enslaved by ROUN(D)TREEs and had taken the name upon freedom.

There have been many stories as to where the name Rowntree (Rountree) came from exactly. According to one source, the first child to have this name was a child who was found under a tree called "Rowan Tree"., a mountain ash growing in Yorkshire, England. The child, a boy was dressed in fine cloths. He was found on the grounds of an estate owned by a nobleman, who took pity and compassion on the child and raised him as his own son, naming him "Rowantree" after the tree under which he was found. Who the child was or where he came from , he never found out. This boy's descendant now run in the thousands, and they live in all parts of the world. There is no record of when this boy was found, we can only guess that it was around the time that Columbus discovered the new world since the name of the first record was in 1521 when John Rowntree had a son-in-law and daughter bring a lawsuit against his relative to land and houses. Some say this John Rowntree was the child found under the tree or perhaps a son.
