Biography

HENRY QEORGE ARCHIBALD ROUSE, born on the 20th June, 1554, received his engineering training, with a view to his following the marine branch of"-the profession, 1876. He went to sea, as third engineer of the mail steamer “ Solway,” in December, 1877, and served nearly 6 years afloat in the “ Solway,” ‘‘ Marlborough” and “ Chamois ” as third, and subsequently as second engineer, having passed the Board of Trade examination in the latter class. In 1883 he received anappointment in the drawing office of Messrs. J. I. Thornycroft and Company, of Chiswick, where he remained a short time, afterwards relinquishing the pursuit of his profession. Although in later years an invalid, he became well known as an authority on yachting, to which he was devoted. He held for some time the position of honorary treasurer of the Yacht Racing Association, an office which gave him a seat on the council, where his sound judgment and advice on technical matters were of great service. He designed several small yachts and did much to improve the sport in the Solent. Ill-health prevented his taking an active part inyacht racing in recent years, but he was very popular in racing circles alike for his unequalled knowledge of the sport and a keen but kindly sense of humour. His death at West Byfleet, Surrey, on the 5th November, 1906, was deeply and widely regretted. Rouse was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 5th February, 1884.
