Obituary
John was a Union soldier in Company D, 140th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. His military muster roll said that John enlisted in Columbus, IN on 8 October 1864, was 30 years old and was born in London, VA (now WV), which is probably the London that is currently in Kanawha County WV. His military muster roll said that he had blue eyes, sandy hair, a fair complexion and was 5' 8" tall. It listed his residence as Harrison Township, 3 Congressional District, in Bartholomew Co. IN.
John was the son of Eleazer and Eliza (nee McKee) Rouse who migrated to Bartholomew County IN from Washington County VA after Eleazer's father John Rouse died.
John married twice. His first wife was Sarah Ann Crail, daughter of Thomas Jefferson Crail and ____ Coil or Mary Coy (may be spelling variants), who is listed on her sister Hannah Jane (nee Crail) Bishop's death certificate as Hannah's mother. John's second wife was Mary Eliza Weaver.
NOTE: John's birth date is given as 1832, although several different records are not consistent regarding his age, and thus birth year. His grandson Andrew Jackson Crail in an article by the same name in a book entitled Missouri, the Center State said that his grandfather was born in 1832. A directory (The People's Guide...) listed him as born in 1831. The 1860 federal census lists him as age 29. The 1870 federal census lists him as age 40. The 1880 federal census lists him as age 52. His military medical records list various ages for him.
