Joseph François Alphonse est né le 28 mai 1893, fils de David Rousseau, ferblantier plombeur(sic), et de sa troisième épouse Hermine Gamache. Il est baptisé le jour même de sa naissance à St-Sauveur-de-Québec. Son parrain était son beau-frère François Lapointe, tailleur de cuir, sa marraine, sa soeur Hedwige Rousseau. Les deux ont signé le registre ainsi que son père. [1]
Joseph Rousseau entreprit des études religieuses et joignit les Oblats de Marie-Immaculée le 2 août 1913. Il poursuivit ses études en Italie, quittant le Canada via New York le 28 octobre 1915. Il est de retour brièvement au Canada le 19 juillet 1923 ayant prononcé ses vœux perpétuels en 1917. Il retourne terminer ses études à Rome jusqu'en 1927.
Il a obtenu 3 doctorats à Rome : en philosophie, en théologie et en droit canonique.
Il retourne au Vatican après quelques années au Canada et y passera plus de 25 ans dans diverses fonctions au Saint-Siège. Il participera ainsi au Concile Vatican II.
Il est décédé à Ottawa le 28 avril 1978 et est enterré au cimetière Notre-Dame-de-Gatineau dans la section des Oblats. [2] [3]
Joseph François Alphonse was born 28 May 1893, he was the son of tinsmith plumber David Rousseau and his third wife Hermine Gamache. He was baptized the same day in St-Sauveur-de-Québec, godparents were leather worker François Lapointe, his brother in law, and Hedwige Rousseau his sister. The father and godparents all signed the register. [1]
Joseph Rousseau pursued religious studies and entered the Oblates religious order on 2 Aug 1913. He furthered his studies in Italy, leaving Canada via New York 28 Oct 1915 and returning 19 Jul 1923 for a visit as per his entry declaration. [4] He then returned to Italy to complete his studies returning to Canada in 1927.
He completed 3 doctorates in Rome: Philosophy, Theology and Canonical Law.
After a few years in Canada, he was called back to the Vatican. He would then live in Rome for over 25 years and went on to have a distinguished life and career. He was Procurator to the Holy See and Secretary of The Religious Commission during Vatican II and, as such, was the French Canadian with the highest posting to the Vatican. He died 28 Apr 1978 in Ottawa. [2]
He is buried in Cimetière Notre-Dame [Notre Dame Cemetery] (Section: Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate), Gatineau County, Québec. [3]
