Born in 1814, Mary was the daughter of John and Hulda (Evans) Rousseau, in Georgia, where she was raised and lived her life. Mary wed John Franklin Cowan, the son of John and Susannah (Glover) Cowan, in 1838. They settled in Putnam County, Georgia, and had the following children:
Martha Ann (Cowan) Powell (1840–1929)
John Randolph Cowan (1842–1933)
Mary Cowan (1846–)
Virginia (Cowan) Williford (1847–1908)
Franklin Cowan III (1849– )
Mary died the same year, 1849, as her youngest child was born leading to speculation she died as a result of childbirth. No death or burial records have been found.
