Mogie R. McCray, 95, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in the First United Methodist Church in Panhandle with Rev. Jerry Lane of First United Methodist Church of White Deer officiating. Mogie was born on July 3, 1920 in Munday, Texas, to William Edward and Mogie [Routh].

Mogie grew up in Amarillo, Texas and graduated from Amarillo High School. She attended West Texas State College. There, she met James B., Jim, McCray of Panhandle, Texas. They were married September 10, 1941 in Polk Street Methodist Church in Amarillo. They celebrated 69 years of marriage prior to Jim's passing in 2011. They lived in Borger, Tulsa, Oklahoma, San Antonio, and Oklahoma City for a couple of years, where Jim was among the first employees to open Tinker Air Base.

After Jim's enlistment in the Army Air Corps, Mogie returned to Amarillo to her parents while Jim was overseas. After the war, Jim and Mogie moved to Panhandle and started their farming operation, moving to a farm 9 miles northeast of Panhandle. They moved into town in 1952, where they resided until 2009. At that time, Jim and Mogie moved to an apartment in Park Place Towers in Amarillo, Texas, where she resided at the time of her passing.

Three children were born to the couple, William Chester, Bill, in 1946, Robert Edward Bob in 1949, and Jean Ann in 1952. Bob drowned in an accident in White Deer in 1957. Bill died of cancer in Amarillo in 2002. Jean was a practicing attorney for many years and has recently retired and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Mogie was a homemaker and also active in civic affairs in Panhandle and the state. She served on the Texas PTA Board as district president, cultural arts chairman and regional vice president. She was a district governor of the Beautify Texas Council. She was president of the Panhandle Chamber of Commerce and was named Panhandle Citizen of the Year for 1978. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Carson County Square House Museum Board of Trustees. She served as chairman of the Carson County Historical Commission for many years. She was active in many capacities in the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle. She enjoyed singing in the church choir for more than 50 years.

Mogie and Jim were members of the Old Main Society at West Texas A&M in Canyon, having established President's Honor Scholarships. They also endowed the James B. and Mogie R. McCray Professorship of Business.

Mogie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mogie Routh; her husband, Jim McCray, two sons, Bill and Bob McCray; and a sister-in-law, Genevieve McCray Lusby.

Survivors include her daughter, Jean A. McCray and partner Phyllis H. Subin of Santa Fe; a granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. (Published by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors, January 24, 2016)
