Research Notes

  • NOTES FOR POSSIBLE FATHER for THOMAS ROWAN

1. http://genforum.genealogy.com/rowan/messages/1095.html

  • I can give you a bit more information on generations further back. At this time, I believe (certainly not proven yet) that Thomas Rowan's father was William Rowan who appears in Rockbridge County, VA, tithables for 1778 & 1782. He is probably the same William Rowan who was tried for the killing of Chief Cornstalk in 1777 and acquitted. (From Cornstalk and Rockbridge County, by Angela Ruley.) In any event, more research is needed here.
  • There is also a James Rowan in the area (northern Rockbridge County on the border with Augusta County.) James had three sons but none of them were named Thomas; also the fact that Thomas named his oldest child William may be a clue that William is Thomas' father.

2. Notes from Oren Morton online book: Morton, Oren Frederic, 1857-1926. A history of Rockbridge County, Virginia [electronic resource] (Kindle Location 2123). Staunton, Va. : McClure Co.

  • Joseph Moore, William Paxtoii, and John Gilmore, Jr., qualify as justices, John Trimble as coroner, Harry Innis as attorney, and William Stuart as constable. William Rowan bound as implicated in the murder of Cornstalk, but with the same result as in the other instances. [he was acquitted]

  • Note: When there is more than one person to a name in a given district, the number follows the initial letter. Thus, Adison—L, means there is one Adi-son on the tax list in Lexington District, and as no other initial letter is given, it consequently follows that there is but one such Adison in the county. Austin— N, 8 means there are eight Austins on the voting list in Natural Bridge District.

3. Same family?

  • Mrs. Barolay before marriage was a Miss Rowan, daughter of Mr. William Rowan of near Spottswood, Augusta county. Death of Mrs. EIi. Barclay Mrs. Margaret S. Barclay, widow of Mr. Elihu H. Message Board Post:[7]

Thomas Rowan married Susannah or Susan Donihoo (spelling of surname varies), the daughter of Davis or David Donihoo, 30 Dec. 1789, Rockbridge Co., Virginia, by Rev. John Brown. Thomas worked for an iron forge owned by William Moore near Vesuvius. Names on marriage bonds: Joseph Bennett or Burnett, William Moore, George Munro, William Bradley.

I am researching the family of William Rowan, b. Virginia 1790. He was the son of Thomas Rowan and Susannah Donihoo (Donahue? Donaou?) who married in Rockbridge County, Virginia, 1789. Susannah was the daughter of David or Davis Donihoo. Thomas may be the son of William Rowan of Rockbridge County c1775.

Would like to exchange info. Thomas Rowan and Susanna may be the parents of my William Rowan b. 1790 in Virginia, died in Louisiana.

David or Davis Donihoo (Donoho, Donohoe) was Susannah's father. He appears in 1783 in Amherst County (now Nelson County), Virginia, where he was a tithable with 4 whites. In 1787 he purchased 94 acres on a "branch of Hatt and Raccoon Creeks" which he sold in 1791. It appears that by 1789 David had moved slightly west to Rockbridge County although he retained the Amherst Co. property for two more years.

Elizabeth Rowan's baptismal records from Rev. Hebert's book "Southwest Louisiana Records - Church and Civil Records Vol. 2 - B 1819 - 1825" give "Thomas Rowan and Susanne Donaou (Donahue) as paternal grandparents."

That's all I have for now on the parents of Thomas Rowan and his wife Susannah Donihoo. Both these families are associated with the Presbyterian Scots-Irish settlers of southwest Virginia. Thomas and Susannah likely migrated to Tennessee. I will continue working on these families and keep your e-mail address.
