Biography

Martha Rowan was born 1730 and was the daughter of William Rowan and Jane (Marshall) Rowan according to the source I am quoting.

The Rowans were a well known family in Antrim County history and were of English descent.

Martha Rowan married Gilbert Marshall (II) June 1, 1748. The record of their marriage is in the Carnmoney Presbyterian Records, Antrim County, North Ireland.

Gilbert and Martha had their first child christened in Antrim County, Ireland, April 22, 1750 in the little parish of Carnmoney, which was within walking distance of Belfast. Later that same year they set sail for America. They were in Pennsylvania for 2 years in a community known as Little Britain, where their second child was born. After that 2 years they moved to Albemarle County, Virginia and purchased 250 Acres of land on Bach Creek in 1753, where their other 10 children were born.

Gilbert was given a land grant of 400 acres in Kentucky in 1781. At that time it was a newly explored part of Virginia. He moved his family there under the military guard of General Samuel Daviess, who was his son-in-law.

Various articles in early Kentucky history tell of the courage displayed by Janie (Marshall) Daviess and her brothers in the early Indian warfare of that state.

In 1787, because of the dangers in the area, Gilbert and Martha moved down near Nashville, Tennessee, and bought land on Whites Creek. They both died there and are buried in the Marshall Cemetery on their land. Gilbert's will is dated 30 December, 1799 and proved June 16, 1801, and the source I am quoting states that Martha lived only a few months longer than he did.
