William was born in 1819 in Cornwall. He was the son of John Rowe and Johanna Simons. His christening took place at St Agnes, near Truro, on 10 October 1819.
Events in his early life were:
• He was christened on 10 Oct 1819, St Agnes, Cornwall, England
• He appeared on the census in 1841 in St Agnes, Cornwall, England
• He worked as a Tin Miner in 1841 in St Agnes, Cornwall, England
• He married Susannah Cocking on 20 Nov 1842 in Truro, Cornwall, England
• Two daughters born in Cornwall
• He was brought out from Cornwall by Sir George Grey in 1845 to mine in Auckland, and from there started his mining career in New Zealand. He initially was engaged by the Great Barrier Copper Mining Company.
Their next child, Susan Rowe, was born on Kawau Island, which was the location of another early New Zealand mining operation. Her birth may have come following the death of her older two sisters, who died on Kawau Island. She was followed by three brothers, also born on Kawau Island as the family remained living there in their early days in New Zealand.
William became a well-known mining expert in New Zealand, and politician. He was an early member of the Provincial Council of Auckland, and took his seat as the member for Newton in 1862. (Note the first Provincial Council met in 1853).
William later became a Member of the House of Representatives, representing the Thames district. He was the manager of two well known mines in the Thames district before passing the reins to other men.
He was also known for his religious commitment, at least in his early years.
William Rowe appears to have entered a bad patch in his later years. He was arrested in Wellington for stealing a florin, and sentenced to prison for 48 hours. [1] He did however return to work as a mining consultant, and a report in the Thames Advertiser on 28 April 1881 shows he suffered an accident while inspecting the Caledonian mine.
Yesterday's Thames Advertiser says :— "Mr. William Rowe, ex-M.H.R., had a narrow escape from instant death yesterday. It appears that he had been inspecting the workings of the Caledonian mine, in company with several gentlemen, and whilst ascending the shaft by the cage struck his head against one of the timbers of the shaft. The blow was a very severe one, and almost stunned him." (New Zealand Herald, Volume XVIII, Issue 6068, 29 April 1881)
He passed away in 1886 in Thames, after suffering a period of time with bronchitis, and was buried at Tararu Cemetery.
