Biography

Birth and Birth Family

Jimmy was born in 5 Feb 1905 in Odessa, Russia according to a California Passenger and Crew List from his arrival 30 Jan 1949 in Oakland.

Arrival and Citizenship

FamilySearch.org has records for Jimmy prior to his marriage in 1926; his name was Fishel Roshen when he arrived from Russia. The 1930 U.S. Census says that he is a naturalized citizen who immigrated from Russia in 1914. His wife, Hertha, immigrated from Germany in 1911 and is a naturalized citizen of the U.S.

Marriage and Children

Paula Hartmann's family records say that Jimmy married Hertha Hartmann 3 July 1926 in Madera County, California.

28 Aug 1928 Jimmy's son, Paul James Rowe, was born in Raymond, Madera County, California.

15 July 1930 Jimmy's daughter, Eleanor Frida Rose Rowe, was born in Raymond, Madera County, California.

An Ancestry Family Tree says that Jimmy married Florence E Oneil (1914 – 2002) 14 Dec 1936 in Los Gatos, California. There do not appear to have been any children from this marriage.

Residence

Paula Hartmann told me that she once shared an apartment in San Francisco with Jimmy and Hertha. I don't know whether that was the same apartment that Hertha and Paula had shared with their parents when they first moved from Raymond to San Francisco after the girls graduated from high school.

In the 1930 U.S. Census, Philip J Rowe and Herta E Rowe were enumerated at Township 4, Madera County, California. They owned the house. Philip J was a plumber.

In 1932 James P Rowe and Hertha C Rowe lived at 961 Bellomy, San Jose, California according to a city directory. In 1932 Philip Rowe was registered Rep. At 961 Bellomy. Mrs. Hertha Rowe was registered Dem. At 961 Bellomy.

In 1933 Jimmy and Hertha lived at 507 Lafayette, San Jose, California according to a city directory. In 1934 P James Rowe and Hertha C Rowe lived at 507 Lafayette per the city directory. In 1935 P James Rowe and Hertha lived at 507 Lafayette per the city directory. In 1936 Philip James Rowe was a registered Democrat at 507 Lafayette, Santa Clara, California. There is no other Rowe registered at that address.

In 1938 Philip James Rowe and Mrs. Florence E Rowe are registered Dem at 507 Lafayette, Santa Clara, California. In 1940 Philip J Rowe and Florence Rowe lived at “h507 Lafayette”, Los Gatos, California per a city directory. In 1940 both Philip James and Florence E Rowe are registered Dem at 507 Lafayette, Santa Clara. In 1942 just Philip James Rowe is registered at 507 Lafayette, Santa Clara, California.

During part of the 1960s Paul Rowe, Jimmy's son, lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. He had some limited contact with Jimmy who had a plumbing business somewhere in the Bay Area.

In 1987 Philip James Rowe born 5 Feb 1905 is recorded in the U.S. Public Records Index at 1038 Cupid Ave., Christmas, FL, 32709-9531.

Death

Philip James Rowe died 8 Jan 1992 in Orange, Florida, United States according to the Florida Death Index. He is listed as White, age 86, born 5 Feb 1905.

Other

Herta once told me that she and Jimmy and their young children lived in New York City for some months. This may have been between 1930 and 1932.

Jimmy did plumbing in the Far East in the years after World War II. I think that he was involved in building housing for the families of the soldiers and sailors who were left as occupying forces. There are two records of his returns to the U.S. from or during these jobs.
