William MOORE [states]: " ...to wit that has been personally acquainted with the soldier Leonard MOORE all his life. The affiant's life being said soldier's son and 52 years of age, that said soldier was married in Posey County, Ind. in March 1866 to applicant Esther MOORE and lived with her as his wife until he died December 11th 1886... says he is the son of the soldier by his first wife who died in Posey County, Ind., in March, 1865... 28 March 1891."

And finally, the affidavit of J. C. Gregory, M. D., of Posey County, Ind.: "that had been acquainted with the said soldier for about thirty years,

Jane Ann ROW, first wife of Leonard MOORE , by David Glen MOORE

''My paternal great-great grandfather, Leonard MOORE, of Posey County, Indiana, and Henderson County, Kentucky (1817-1888), was married twice. His first wife was Jane Ann ROW(E)[1] (rhymes with cow); his second wife was Esther/Hester KELTON. Henry ROWE was living in Black Township in the vicinity of the various MOORE households by 1830[2]

The actual birth year of Jane An ROW/ROWE I have not been able to find but it seems to have been around 1821-1824 [3]. Leonard MOORE married Jane ROW on 3 March 1836, in Posey County, Indiana [4]. The fact that Leonard and Jane do not appear in the census until 1850 leads me to suspect that they lived for awhile with his father Aaron or her father Henry [5]. From 1850 onward Leonard appears as head of the household. By 1870 Leonard and family were living in Point Township and he had a new wife, Esther [6]. So I knew that either they had divorced or Jane had died between 1860 and 1870. Upon finding that Leonard and Esther KELTON married on 28 March 1866 [7-8], I could now narrow the range from 1860-1865. Then in the fall of 2001 I learned that Leonard had been a private in the 91st Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. The National Archives supplied me with his and Esther's pension records from which I found this:

  • "The affiant Charles MOORE says he is the son of Leonard MOORE, deceased, and the step-son of Esther MOORE; that the affiant's mother's name was {looks like Janus} MOORE; the first wife of Leonard MOORE; that affiant's mother died in Posey County, State of Indiana in the year 1865, that the affiant was eight yeas old when his mother died... 30 April 1887."

So now I knew that Jane had died in 1865; in Posey County. Then there was this from the affidavit of another son of Jane and Leonard, William MOORE:

  • " ...to wit that has been personally acquainted with the soldier Leonard MOORE all his life. the affiant's life being said soldier's son and 52 years of age, that said soldier was married in Posey County, Ind. in March 1866 to applicant Esther MOORE and lived with her as his wife until he died December 11th 1886... says he is the son of the soldier by his first wife who died in Posey County, Ind., in March, 1865... 28 March 1891."

And finally, the affidavit of J. C. Gregory, M. D., of Posey County, Ind.:

  • "that [he] had been acquainted with the said soldier for about thirty years, affiant also says that he treated Jane MOORE, the first wife of the said Leonard MOORE in her last sickness, that said wife of said soldier died in March 1865... 2 April 1892."

So now I knew that Jane Ann ROW, first wife of Leonard MOORE and my great-great grandmother died after an illness in March 1865 in Posey County, Indiana. Leonard was in the service from October 1863 to July 1865, spending most of that time in various military hospitals for chronic diarrhea and the effects of the mercury they gave him for treatment [9]. It is of note that Esther was around 26 at the time she married Leonard. As far as I know they did not have any children. I have wondered since if, besides the deterioration if his jaw and nerves if the mercury treatment may have rendered him sterile.

So far I have found neither tombstone nor a record of the burial of Mrs. Jane Ann MOORE. Several MOOREs including her daughter Mary Jane and father-in-law Aaron are buried in the MOOREs Cemetery at Farmersville, Indiana, off Ind 69 just north of Mount Vernon. I suspect that she is thee too.'
