John was born in 1859. He was the son of Cornish immigrants Francis Rowe and Mary Trevarthen. He was born in New Zealand.
He married Julia Matthews in 1881. Having won some money in a sweepstake, he and a few of his friends took the opportunity of proposing marriage and were successful in their proposals. Julia was a daughter of William Matthews, of His Majesty's Customs.
He passed away in 1941 aged 81 at a private hospital. The funeral was held at his late residence in Marsden Avenue in Mt Eden the following day, with a private interment. He was buried at Hillsborough Cemetery in Auckland.
His Obituary read:
MR. JOHN ROWE
The death has occurred of an old colonist Mr. John Rowe of 89 Marsden Avenue, Mount Eden. Mr Rowe was born in Auckland 81 years ago and, but for a brief period, lived here all his life. Mr Rowe was for many years a building contractor and for some considerable time was connected with the Education Board works. He was one of the oldest Congregational Church members in Auckland, and a great worker in the temperance movement. He was married to Miss Julia Matthews, a daughter of the late William Matthews, of His Majesty's Customs, Auckland. Mr Rowe's wife predeceased him two years ago, and he is survived by his family of three sons and four daughters. One son gave his life in the Great War. [1]
