Biography

Benjamin Rowell was born in about 1808 in Folksworth, Huntingdonshire, England. His father was William Rowell.

Benjamin Rowell, bachelor, and Caroline Hudson, spinster, were married by Banns on 16 Apr 1832 at St Nicholas' Church in Brighton, Sussex - the witnesses were W Ayling & Sarah Brick.[1][2][3]

Benjamin and Caroline had seven children:

  1. Harriet Emily (Rowell) Richardson (1833-1907)
  2. William Walter Rowell (1835-1867)
  3. Kate Clara Rowell (1837-1841)
  4. Sidney Benjamin Rowell (1840-1915)
  5. Kate Clara Ellen (Rowell) Towgood (1842-1929)
  6. Edwin George Thomas Rowell (1844-1918)
  7. Elizabeth Augusta (Rowell) Green (1846-1921)

In 1841 Benjamin Rowell (age 30-34, Tailor) lived at Norman Cross in Yaxley, Huntingdonshire with his wife Carolne (30-34) and four children: Hariet (7), William (6), Kate Clara (3), and Sidney (1), as well as boarder [possibly his mother] Elizabeth Rowell (66) and Andrew Beaton (18, Apprentice).[4][5]

In 1851 Benjamin Rowell (age 43, Tailor) lived in Yaxley with his wife Carolin (43) and five children: Walter (15), Sideney (10), Kate (8), Edwin (7), and Elizabeth (4).[6]

Benjamin's wife passed away in late September 1851.

In 1861 Benjamin Rowell (age 53, Tailor Master) lived at 87 Speechley Lane in Yaxley with his daughter Elizabeth (14, Housekeeper) and niece Elizabeth Rowell (15, Visitor).[7]

Benjamin Rowell married Susan Goacher in 1863. The marriage was registered in Peterborough, Northamptonshire [the RD for Yaxley] in the first quarter of the year.[8]

In 1881 Benjamin Rowell (age 73, Tailor) lived at High Street in Yaxley with his wife Susan (56).[9][10]

Benjamin's wife passed away in 1884.

In 1891 Benjamin Rowell (age 83, Retired Tailor) lived at Town Street in Yaxley with housekeeper Everelda Savage (24, Dressmaker) and granddaughter Elizabeth Green (19).[11][12]

Benjamin Rowell passed away on 13 Oct 1893, aged 87 years. His death was registered in Peterborough in the last quarter of the year.[13]

"ROWELL Benjamin of Yaxley Huntingdonshire tailor died 13 October 1893 Probate London 6 April [1894] to Sidney Benjamin Rowell tailor and draper Effects £10."[14]
