Frank Milton Rowell was born on 5th April 1876 at Lockleys, South Australia, Australia. He was the eldest son of John Rowell and Mary Broadfoot.[1]
Like his uncle, James Rowell, and illustrious cousin, (Lieutenant General Sir) Sydney Fairbairn Rowell, Frank built a career in the military.
He was a junior officer in the 2nd South Australian Mounted Rifles during the Boer War.[2]
Upon return from the war, Frank married Kate Debney Stanford in 1903 at Adelaide, South Australia.[3] When the First World War broke out he immediately transferred (17th September 1914) to the Australian Imperial Force and was appointed commanding officer of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. The unit embarked for the Middle East on 22nd October 1914.[4] Like other Light Horse Regiments, the 3rd were deployed to Gallipoli peninsula without their horses, as they would be in trenches just as infantry. They landed on 12th May 1915 and became part of the ANZAC Division.[5]He died on 8th August 1915 of peritonitis from wounds received at Quinn's Post, Gallipoli. He was at sea aboard HS Gloucester Castle. He is remembered at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. Frank Milton Rowell's name is located at panel 4 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.[6] He was posthumously mentioned in despatches.[7]
