Biography

John and his brother Thomas were baptised on 22nd April 1823 at St Margaret of Antioch Church, Tanfield, County Durham, England. Their parents were William and Mary Rowell, of Parkhead. William was a labourer.^[1]

In 1841 the family lived at Cragghead, Edmondsley, Chester le Street, County Durham. John was a pitman:^[2][3]

John's marriage to Elizabeth Hedley was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1860 in the Durham district, England.^[4]

In the 1861 census John (age 38) was the married head of household in Durham, England.^[5] They lived at 58 Craghead, Lanchester, Durham.^[6]

In the 1871 census John (age 48) was the married head of household in Twizell Colliery, Durham, England.^[7]

In the 1881 census John (age 58) was the married head of household in Wood Row Twizell, Edmondsley, Durham, England.^[8]

In the 1891 census John (age 68) was the widowed head of household in Edmondsley, Durham, England.^[9]

In the 1901 census John (age 78) was the widowed grand father of George Hall H Rowell in Edmondsley, Durham, England.^[10]

Research Notes

It is possible that I have made the wrong link between infant John, christened in 1822, young John living with his family in 1841 and adult John in 1861 and subsequently.

John and his brother Thomas were baptised together, probably the same age, and were the same age in 1841, correct father's name. The family had moved from Tanfield to Edmondlsy which is close to Chester le Street. I cannot see any location on the 1861 census, but Lanchester is not far away / a 'Craghead' is close to Edmondsley. John's birth place was recorded as Tanfield in teh later censuses, and nearby Beamish in 1901. Also, John's sister Elizabeth was 10 years younger than him in 1841 and 1861.
