Biography

This profile is part of the Rowland Name Study.

Stephen was born in 1791 and passed away in 1860.

Stephen Rowland was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina in 1791. He was the son of Rev War Patriot James Rowland and his wife Elizabeth Jones. James Rowland served a 6-month tour of duty with the Anson County, NC Militia in its 1776-1777 incursion and campaign against the Cherokee Indians in the western part of South Carolina.

Between 1800 and 1817, James Rowland moved his family to that part of Williamson County, Tennessee that, on 21 October 1817, would become Lawrence County, Tennessee. On 12 October 1818, Stephen Rowland married Sarah McHugh (aka Sally McKew) in Lawrence County with her brother, Charles McHugh (McKew) serving as bondsman. One month later, Charles McHugh married Mary "Polly" Rowland, daughter of James Rowland and sister of Stephen. (Note Sarah, Jane, James, John and Charles McHugh were children of Moses and Jane McHugh who came to Williamson County, Tennessee from Morgan County, KY in 1803. Over the next 80 years, children of Moses and Jane McHugh would see their surname sometimes spelled McKew, McCue, McHughs and McHughes. In the later years McHughes seemed to win out. These names are used interchangeably in this bio.)

In November 1818 a voter census (e.g. male land owners) was ordered for the new county and registered as neighbors were Charles, John and James McHughs as well as Stephen Rowland and "Old man (eg James) Rowland.

James and Stephen Rowland moved to McNairy County, TN sometime between 1822 and 1826. On 30 June 1826 Land occupancy claims for adjacent acreages in McNairy County, TN were awarded to James Roland and his son Stephen Roland. Also moving to McNairy County about this time were Stephen's brother-in-laws, James and Charles McHugh and their families. All were enumerated as neighbors in McNairy County in the 1830 Census.

In 1832, the Indians were removed from NE Mississippi and Tishomingo County, MS was created touching the SE corner of McNairy County, TN. About that time, Stephen Rowland and his brother-in-law Charles McHugh moved there. Charles McHugh died about 1843 and about that same year, Stephen Rowland moved his family to Newton County, Arkansas...there joining his sister in law, Jane McHugh Henson and her husband John Henson in the Parthenon area. They were later joined by John McHugh and his family during the early 1850's.

Stephen's wife, Sarah, died in 1845 in Newton County following the birth of her last child, Martha.

Stephen and Sarah had 10 children born between 1819 and 1845. There were 9 daughters and one son. The known names and approx year of birth are:

  1. Dau #1 - b. 1819
  2. Dau #2 - b. 1821, married in Tishomingo Co., MS and had one son born before 1840. She, husband and son living with Stephen in 1840.
  3. Dau #3 - Mary Ann "Polly" Rowland, b. Jul 1823 in Lawrence Co., TN; mar. John Smith in Newton Co. on 22 May 1844.
  4. Dau #4 - Malinda Rowland, b. 1827 in McNairy Co., TN; mar. 1846 to James M. Seaboalt, died in California
  5. Sarah Jane Rowland, b. 8 Jan 1829, in McNairy Co., TN; mar. 1849 to William Riley Seaboalt
  6. Dau #5 - Elizabeth Rowland, b. 1831, m. Vincent Dillard Henderson in Newton Co., AR
  7. Dau #6 - b. 1834
  8. Son #1 - John Rowland, b. Apr 1837, Tishomingo Co., MS; mar. Nancy Owen
  9. Rebecca Rowland, b. 1839, Tishomingo Co., MS; mar. William "Bud" Owen (brother of Nancy Owen)
  10. Martha Rowland, b. Feb 1845, Newton Co., AR; mar. Adam Powell Dunlap

James and William Riley Seaboalt were sons of John Seabolt and Mahaly Kelly. There is no source documentation that proves his wife Malinda was daughter of Stephen Rowland.

Nancy Owen was the sister of William "Bud" Owen and both were children of Richard Owen and Emaline Moody. Their sister Malissa Alvira Owen married George W. McHughes, son of John McHughes and nephew by marriage of Stephen Rowland.

Stephen lived in the Parthenon area of Newton County from 1844 until his death sometime after 1860. While there is no record of his burial in any Newton County cemetery, there is good reason to believe he is in an unmarked grave in Buffalo Cemetery, as it was the closest to his residence and a majority of his known neighbors are buried there.

He is not the Stephen M. Rowland who married Sarah Minerva Stampley in Jefferson County, MS on 25 Aug 1818. That couple had four children, 3 boys and 1 girl, and that Stephen died between May and November 1826 in Jefferson County as attested to by records of the Jefferson County Orphans Court between 1827 and 1843.
