Martha was born about 1840.She was the daughter of James Rowland, a farmer from Lisgorran, County Monaghan. At the age of 19, she married James Gillanders, a widowed farmer, son of James Gillanders also a farmer, both from Ballymacforbane on 4 Mar 1873 at Presbyterian Derryvalley Meeting[1][2]. She was the second of his three wives. They were believed to have had 2 children.
Martha passed away at Ballymacforbane in 1877, aged 23 ,following two strokes , probably from pre-eclampsia[2][3]
