John was born in 1833. He passed away in 1911. John Edward Royal was a native of Athens, Clark County, Georgia, USA who came to CA via the Isthmus of Panama in 1852 during the CA Gold Rush. He went to work in the mines in Placerville, CA then moved to Sonoma County to live in Green Valley. Later he moved to Sebastopol, CA and engaged in business. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1876 and married Mary Ellen Miller in 1861. They had 6 children. The 1880 census lists him as owning 2 slaves and his occupation as a harness maker.
