Meyer Rubin was born 1857 and likely in Podolsk, Lithuania. He married Sarah. His two sons, Samuel and Louis, were conscripted into the Russian Army. Conscription into the Russian army was like a death sentence. They all left for America around 1906.
On January 13 1907, while they were living in Brooklyn, NY, a forgotten pot of boiling liquid extinguished the pilot light on the gas stove, causing gas to fill the bottom floor of the 6 floor apartment while they were asleep. Overnight Meyer Rubin, his wife Sarah and his 17 year old son Philip Rubin passed away from asphyxiation.
Meyers son, Louis Rubin, came home from a wedding to discover the intense gas fumes. Though his sister, Hattie, was found alive, she passed away a few hours later.
The tragedy made headlines in the front page nationally. Meyers daughter, Elizabeth, named her son after her father.
