Obituary

Verna Elaine Butler passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 23 at Sardis Oaks Nursing Home. Mrs. Butler was born on April 14, 1928 in Weymouth, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of Leslie and Marie Ruggles. After high school, Verna left her Canadian homestead and set out on a cross country trip through the United States with her sister Joan, finally settling in Los Angeles, California. There she met her husband, Roy Walrod Butler. During Roy's Air Force career, they experienced many adventures, living in France, Germany, California, Greece and Spain before moving to New Jersey and then Charlotte, NC. They lived in the same home for over 45 years, where they raised their only son, Donald. Verna served in a variety of leadership roles in the Boy Scouts organization and remained very active at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, where she was Treasurer for the Women's Group and an avid participant in the Young at Heart "YAH" group in her later years. She had a strong work ethic, serving over 20 years at Herff Jones. Verna was known for her feisty personality and loved the holidays, particularly Christmas and St. Patrick's Day. It is fitting that her Memorial Service will take place on March 17. She was a faithful wife, a loving mother and a loyal friend. In her final years, Verna moved to Brookdale East Independent Living before falling ill and moving to Sardis Oaks.

Mrs. Butler was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Roy Walrod Butler; her parents, Leslie and Marie Ruggles; sisters, Joan Seaver, Polly Ruggles, Leslie O'Neal, Norma Fraser and baby Mildred; and brothers, Bobby and Dick Ruggles. She is survived by her son, Donald Roy Butler, daughter-in-law Emily Mustacchia Butler; and only granddaughter, Willow; brother, Jack Ruggles.[1]
