John Ruland was a butter merchant in Jefferson but later, in 1854, graduated with honor from Castleton Medical College in Vermont. He practiced for eight years in Blenheim, then he and his wife spent a year in travel. In 1865 he bought the stage route from Richmondville to Stamford, New York. He soon sold out and conducted a large grocery buiness in Unadilla from 1866 to 1871. From there they moved to Oneonta where he was a druggist. Dr. John Ruland died of a heart attack while delivering an address to those old settlers who had moved there from Schoharie County.
Information from Steve Watrous of Springville, Utah - Ruland Family Researcher (1997) - transcript entitled "The Ruland Genealogy" by John Ruland, M.D., dated 1885:
"Relying on tradition, one or more persons of the name of Ruland emigrated from England to New England about 1650, of whom Israel, Benjamin, Joseph, Obadiah, and others were probably direct descendants. The Ruland families of which the writer is known to be a member can be readily traced back to the early settlement of Long Island. They were citizens of Suffolk county (then the East Riding of Yorkshire.) The earliest settlements were made in 1639 on Gardner's island. The town of Hungtington, L.I., was settled in 1653 by English emigrants from Ne wEngland. At about the same time a company from Sandwich, Massachusetts, settled Suffolk, England, from whence came the early emigrants to Massachusetts. The above, Obadiah (1) was born about 1735 in the eastern part of Long Island and settled at Comac (post-office, Commack) and married; name of wife or date of marriage unknown."
Continues to Obadiah (2):
