Biography

Henry Rule was born in Scotland.

Henry Rule was born in the parish of Falkirk on 17 April 1851 and was the son of Robert Rule and Agnes Kerr.^[1]

On the 1851 census, Henry is living in the Bainsford area of Falkirk with his parents and older sister.^[2] On the 1861 census, Henry is living in the Grahamston area of Falkirk with his parents and older sister.^[3]

Henry married Elizabeth Greenaway in the parish of Falkirk on 31 December 1875 and they had fifteen children, although five would die in infancy.^[4]

The 1881 census shows Henry and Elizabeth living at 53 Graham's Road with their two oldest surviving children. Their second son, Henry, born in 1877, died in infancy. A daughter, Agnes, would be born a few weeks after the census but also died in infancy. There are also three family members lodging with them.^[5] The family moved down to Salford for a time as their son, James, was born there in 1885, however they had returned to Falkirk by the time daughter, Helen, was born in 1887.

The 1891 census shows them living at Buchanan Court with seven children at home. Sadly, Helen would die in infancy and her brother, Francis, born in January 1891 would die a month after the census was taken. The oldest son, Robert, has become an iron moulder like his father.^[6] On the 1901 census, Henry and Elizabeth are living on North Back Row, Falkirk, which ran behind the High St in the town centre. They have nine children at home, as well as one granddaughter, Annie, who was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Ann. Since the last census, Elizabeth has given birth to five more children, however their son, Archibald, died in infancy.^[7]

Henry Rule died, aged 81 years, on 7 November 1932.^[8]
