Biography

William Rule was born about 1749. He may be the son of Walter Rule and Margaret Robson who was christened on 25 Dec 1753 in Castleton, Roxburghshire, Scotland. He married Katharine Little on 26 Nov 1774 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Together they had at least 9 children:

  1. Isabel Rule born 1775 in Castleton, married Thomas Wright in 1805 in Canonbie, Dumfriesshire and died in 1817 in Scotland at the age of 41. Children unknown.
  2. Jannet Rule born 1777 in Canonbie, didn’t die young since she is not buried with her siblings and her parents, but it is not yet known what became of her
  3. James Rule 1778 - 1862, moved to Cumberland where he married Jane Hodgson and worked as a cabinet maker / joiner. They had 9 known children.
  4. Jean Rule born 1780 in Canonbie, didn’t die young since she is not buried with her siblings and her parents, but it is not yet known what became of her
  5. Alexander Rule 1783 - 1826, moved to Westerkirk where he married Jean Reid, worked as a shoemaker and had at least 8 children, some of whose descendants emigrated.
  6. Margaret Rule 1785 - 1789, buried with her parents in Canonbie.
  7. Margaret Rule 1788 - 1861, stayed in Canonbie where she is recorded as an agricultural labourer in 1841 living next to her brother Walter and his family on one side and a number of Johnston children on the other. She may also be the Margaret Rule recorded there as a midwife in 1861.
  8. Walter Rule 1790 - married Joan Johnston in 1828 in Canonbie and was still living there in 1841 with his wife and two children, working as an agricultural labourer.
  9. Robert Rule 1792 - 1799, buried with his parents in Canonbie.

William died on March 10, 1802 in Archerbeck, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland and was buried on 12 Mar 1802 in Canonbie.[1]

"In memory of William Rule in Archerbeck who died March 10th 1802 aged 53 years. Also Catharin Little his spouse who died 4th May 1832 aged 85 years. Also Margaret Rule his daughter who died August 24th 1789 aged 3 years. Also Robert Rule his son who died April 14th 1799 aged 6 years. Also Isabella his daughter, spouse to Thomas Wright who died April 20th 1817 aged 41 years."[2]

Research Notes

  • Daughter Isabel was christened in Castleton, Roxburghshire which lends credence to the possibility that William was born in Castleton. There is a possible christening for William in Castleton on 25 Dec 1753 to parents Walter Rule and Margaret Robson. There is an alternative christening of a William Rule to Walter Rule and Jean Cameron on 16 Dec 1742 in Kelso, Roxburghshire, Scotland.[3]
  • The first appearance of a Rule in the Canonby Kirk Session minutes book for 1749-1760 was Janet Rule in Woodhead, who became a communicant [4]Hardman-1532 19:22, 24 April 2024 (UTC)
