George always reported that he was born in Ireland, but according to his father's will, Robert was the eldest. And we have documentary evidence that Robert was born in Quebec, after his father's regiment had left Ireland.
George's father was in charge of the Black militia unit in the War of 1812, known as Captain Runchey's Company of Coloured Men. George served as the Lieutenant in the company.
George married Margaret after the war and moved to Oakland Township, Brant County.
