WebHighlight
Sir Steven was very generous in his responses to enquirers about the RUNCIMAN surname.
Several versions of his tree, 1977, 1985 and 1995, that he shared with others may be found attached to the citations to this entry. The accompanying letters state however that he himself doubted their accuracy.
His grandfather (one of the sources) believed he was related to the, which was thought not to be the case - at least until the dna evidence came rolling in!
The 1977 version of his tree, shared with Mary RUNCIMAN in Sth Africa, shows that his [PAGELINK:]62552;great uncle Thomas[:PAGELINK], the artist, believed there was a connection to the artists Alexander and John RUNCIMAN, but also adds "but he was not sure how" (see source for image).
By 1995 the relationship has morphed into showing descent from an unknown brother of [PAGELINK:]66832;Alexander[:PAGELINK] and John.[13][14][15][16]
