William emigrated from Scotland before 1865
to Canada
Note: William (& Jane??) emigrated to Canada pre 1865 when he/they settled in Northumberland County, Ontario. (lot no. 34 & 35 lot size 50 & 15). Source detached or not noted?
On 30 April 1867 William's wife Jane & family joined him in Canada, their passage & entry recorded on the SS Iowa captain's log :
"SS Iowa Glasgow, Scotland to New York 30 April 1867 DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK I, James Craig, Master of the S.S. 'Iowa', do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of New York, is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Vessel at Glasgow from which Port the said Steamship has now arrived; and that on said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of said passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended by each to become an inhabitant; and that said List or Manifest truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said Voyage and the names and ages of those who died. So help me God. (Signature) James Craig Sworn to, this April 30 1867, Before me. (Signature) ????????, D.C. List or Manifest of ALL THE PASSENGERS taken on board the S.S. 'Iowa' whereof James Craig is Master, from Glasgow, burthen 1437 tons.
Columns represent: given name and surname, age, sex, occupation, the country to which they severally belong, the country of which they intend to become inhabitants, and the part of the ship occupied during the voyage.

It's interesting Jane declared that they intended to become inhabitants of the United States.
Jane's paternal grandmother was a Hay - is it just coincidence a Robert Hay is a fellow passenger?

Note: RUNCIMAN: William 62 carrier b Nth Berwick, HAD; wife Jean 66 b Dirleton, HAD; Dtr Isabella 26 b Dirleton; Brother-in-law John COCKBURN, 56 shoemaker (journeyman)[24]
Note: John Cockburn was at the address in 1841 census. No occupation shown or whether lodger. Presumably this is wife Jane's brother or other relation.
By 1851 he is shown as William's brother-in-law, and was deaf and dumb. At this stage there is no further evidence researched to establish if this was a permanent arrangement. John was 56 at this time (b.1795) and a journeyman shoemaker
