Doris was born and lived all her life in Swan Hill. She attended the Swan Hill Primary and High School.
She met and married John Fletcher in the early years of World War 2. Both of their daughters Jennifer and Wendy were born during those years. John and his brother Harold went away to serve in the Australian Army. During that time, John heard a rumour that he was to be shipped over-seas and he came home to see Doris and Jennifer. This was done without permission and ended in him serving time in Bendigo Goal. However, the ship he should have been on was lost at sea.
During those years, Doris and her sister Vera shared a house. Doris bought a new sewing machine and payed it off by taking in sewing. Doris loved to sew; the most ambitious task was a wedding dress she made for her niece Janice Osman, which was truly beautiful. She made, iced and decorated many special occasions cakes.
After the war, John and Harold’s father subdivided his farm at Woorinen South. He took 10 acres and gave the rest to Harold, Vera, John, and Doris. They share farmed.
In 1949 Doris was diagnosed with a spot on the lung and while she was recuperating she and Vi went for a trip to Daylesford.
In about 1955 the farms were sold and the families moved back into Swan Hill. Doris and John buying 57 Gray Street in which they lived until they died.
Doris was a hard worker. She worked as a seamstress in the Stamina Factory, Curlewis Street. After that she spent many years with the Zaetta Family Photographic Studio, in 1973 she retired from there and had a big trip up through New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and South Australia with Stella, Vera and Harry, Reg and Pat and son-in-law Roy.
On returning from holiday, Doris took up a position with Freemans Fashion salon where she worked until she retired.
Doris loved playing lawn bowls, holidaying, and seeing different parts of Australia. While her daughter Jennifer lived in the outback, Doris would drive all the way up to Tibooburra in her little Hillman, usually taking along another member of the family for company. When Jen and Roy moved back to Swan Hill Doris would plan her holidays with either Reg and Pat or Stella. She and Stella did many a bus tour together.
