Obituary - Mr R Runciman
One of the early pioneers of Papatoetoe district, Mr Robert Runciman passed away on Sunday at the age of 86.
With his parents he came to Auckland by the Cashmere in 1851, as a lad of 17 he served in the Maori War as Sergeant-Major under Colonel Nixon in the No.1 Calvalry Troop of the Otahuhu Regiment.
Mr Runciman took up farming in the Mangere and Papatoetoe districts and in 1866 he married the third daughter of the late John Swanson, builder of Auckland.
He celebrated his Golden Wedding on July 24 1916.
He leaves a widow, one daughter, Miss Runciman of Papatoetoe, and two sons, Mr Wm Runcimanof Takapuna and Mr George Runciman of Papatoetoe.
