Israel was born in 1827. [1] He was the son of John Rupe and Rebecca Lewis. He died in 1910. [1] He was interred at River View Cemetery, Alcorn, Kay County, Oklahoma. [2]
Israel fought in the Civil War in Company A, 7th Calvary, Iowa, along with his brother Martin. [15] They were sent west to patrol the Oregon Trail along the Platte River. [16] During the winter of 1864 Martin froze to death and Israel's feet were frostbitten. [16] During an Indian skirmish in Colorado he was shot in the hip with an arrow. [16] He stood too close to a cannon and lost his hearing. [16] He was given medicine that made him temporarily blind. [16]
