Biography

James Ruse Jnr was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
James Ruse was a Mariner.

James Ruse the younger was born at Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia on 26 March 1793 to James Ruse and Elizabeth Perry. He was baptised at St John’s Parramatta on 7th April, 1793. [1] [2]

In May, 1801 James was indentured to Henry Kable and James Underwood, in partnership with Samuel Rodman Chase, as an apprentice mariner. His indenture papers were contracted between “James Ruse, the younger; James Ruse, the father; and Messers Kable & Underwood.” [3]

February 1804, appeared on the crew list for the schooner Endeavour, the ship mentioned in his indenture papers. [4]

October 1806, appeared on the crew list for the schooner Speedwell. [5]

March 1807, appeared on a crew list to go sealing with Andrew Thompson of the Hawkesbury. [6]

June 1807, appeared on a crew list for The Governor Bligh. [7]

September 1810, appeared on the crew list for the American brig Aurora. The Aurora’s captain was Owen F. Smith, although this voyage was captained by Samuel Rodman Chase. [8] This voyage returned to Sydney at the end of December 1810. [9]

Research Notes

Multiple family trees have incorrectly claimed that James Ruse the younger died in Parramatta in 1794. There are no records supporting him dying in infancy, infact the records prove otherwise.

We now know that it is unlikely that James Snr is on any of these crew lists and that they were most likely all James Jnr, based on 1. This was James Jnr’s trade (see above). 2. The 1804 voyage on the Endeavour is the same ship named in James Jnr’s indenture papers, and 3. The 1810 voyage on the Aurora was from September until just after Christmas, meanwhile James Snr was a witness to Andrew Thompson’s will in October 1810 making it impossible for Snr to be on the Aurora.
