Biography

Susannah (Ruse) English was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)

Susannah Ruse was born in Windsor, New South Wales Australia around 1796 to first fleet convict James Ruse and second fleet convict Elizabeth Perry. Although a baptism record has not been found for Susannah, the 2019 Ruse-Kiss DNA project confirmed that Susannah was indeed the biological daughter of James Ruse and Elizabeth Perry. [1]

In 1810, Susannah married Irish convict Patrick Hargedan. [2] Their male line descendants have adopted the surname Harrigan. Other surname variants for Patrick include Harrigaddy, Haddigaddy, Hawdon and more. Susannah and Patrick became estranged somewhere between 1826 and 1830, with Susannah giving birth to a daughter Bridget in 1831. Bridget’s father was listed as “Richard Ryan”. [3] Whilst there was a man in the colony named Richard Ryan, it is possible that this was an alias for Susannah’s second husband Patrick English. Patrick was the son of Richard English and Mary Ryan. Susannah and Richard English had a son, also named Richard in 1838.

With Patrick Hargedan passing away in 1838, Susannah was free to marry. [4] She married Patrick English in Liverpool, NSW, Australia on 14 Apr, 1839. Like other catholic records during this period, this marriage record has not ended up at NSW Births Deaths and Marriages. Other examples include Susannah’s son Richard and granddaughter Caroline’s baptisms at this same church, and both her parents burial records at Campbelltown. Ruse historian Janice Ruse Huntington found this marriage record, and Caroline’s baptism record amongst the church records held by the Liverpool family history centre.

Susannah passed away in Yass, New South Wales Australia on the 18th of June, 1872. [5]
