Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Crawford Rush was a Virginia colonist.

Crawford or Crafford Rush was the son of Willliam Rush IV and Mary (Hudson) Rush. In 1746 he was named in the will of his grandmother Elizabeth Rush Duff in which she made a bequest to her grandchildren by her deceased son William.

Crawford's birth date is uncertain. Estimates range from 1720[1] to 1740, and a specific (and unsupported) date of 24 Jan 1728 is found. Given that his eldest child was born in 1752 we can use c. 1728 as a plausible placeholder until better information is identified.

His wife Mary Broyles/Briles, the daughter of Conrad Broyles/Briles, was from the German immigrant community on the Robinson River in Culpeper (now Madison) County, Virginia. They surely married there around the year 1750[2] and a few years later they joined Conrad in a move to southern Virginia and then to Randolph County in the Province of North Carolina,[3] where Crawford died a relatively young man in 1787.

Crawford and Mary had the following children:[4]

  1. Benjamin (1752-1819), m. Dorcas Vickery
  2. Isaac, died prior to 1799
  3. Rebecca, b. 12 Oct 1760, m. Benjamin Millikan
  4. John, moved to Kentucky c. 1810
  5. William, entered land in 1787 with Isaac Rush
  6. Mary, living in 1816, single
  7. Margaret, living in 1816, single
  8. Elizabeth, m. Jacob Robins c. 1800

27 Oct 1746 - His grandmother writes her will in which she names Crafford Rush an heir. King George County, Virginia.[5]

c. 1754 - Joining his father-in-law Conrad Briles, Crawford leaves Culpeper Co., Virginia, and moves south to Halifax County.[6]

1755 - Listed in Rowan County, North Carolina census[7]

2 May 1755 - Crawford Rush has 192 acres surveyed on Snow Creek in Halifax County, Virginia. (This land would appear to be in modern Franklin County.) The previous day Cortney (Conrad) Broyls had 242 acres surveyed on the head branches of Snow Creek.[8] Neither man followed up by getting a patent.

19 Feb 1756 - In Halifax Co. court, "Ordered that William Herd, Courtney Broyles, Tully Choice, and Crawford (Rush?), do appraise the Negroes (if any) and personal estate of Henry Bailey".[9]

1764 - listed in VA Early Census Index in Culpeper County, Virginia,[10]

1766 - Listed in Rowan County, North Carolina tax list[11]

1779 - Listed in Randolph County, North Carolina census[12]

6 May 1779 - Obtained Land Grant in Randolph County, North Carolina[13]

- They move to Mountain Fork of Caraway Creek in Randolph Co., N.C.[14]

30 Sep 1783 - Cunrod Brile makes his will in Randolph County. Book A, p12. Son Frederick Brile is to have the plantation of 100 acres. He shall care for his parents and receive 1/3 of the estate. The rest of the estate to be equally divided among Adam Briles, Crafford Rush, Peter Summy, Frederick Whaymoir, Jonas Hewver, George Brile, Thomas Scrivner.

14 Dec 1787 - Benjamin Rush, Benjamin Millikan and Ralph Lowe post bond for the estate assessment of Crawford Rush, dec'd. Randolph County, N.C.[15]

Feb 1816 - The Randolph County court has Alex Gray and William Hogan Esqr. settle with Benjamin Rush as administrator of Crafford Rush dec'd.[16]

He passed away in 1787. [17][18]

Comments

  • William Rush (1739- ? ) previously assigned as a child of Crawford John Rush has been removed. Assuming birth dates are correct for both, Crawford would have only been 11 years old when William was born.
