Peter Rushing is often said to be Peter Peyton Rushing, but without documentation. Evidence for his middle name is needed.
Peter is said to have been born in 1785 in White Store Township, Anson County, North Carolina, and to have died in 1840 in Ozark, Johnson County, Illinois,[1]all without documentation referencing actual records.
Based on Census records, Peter was born sometime between 1774 and 1780,[2][3][4] not 1783. He also appears in the 1840 US Census in Kentucky. The claim that he died and is buried in Johnson County, Illinois also appears to be in error.
Origins
Peter Rushing is the son of Abraham Rushing and his wife Mariah Meador Rushing, named in his father's will.[5] He was born between 1775 and 1780, probably about 1780, Anson County, North Carolina.
Peter would have been one of the two males listed as under the age of 16 in his father's household in the 1790 US Census for Anson County. [6] He would also have been one of the two males age 16-24 in his father's household in 1800.[7]
Marriage and Children
In 1820, Peter and his family were living in Bedford County, Tennesse. There were seven children in the household, 5 boys and 2 girls.[2] The oldest boy (Nathaniel) was born between between 1802 and 1804, suggesting that Peter married soon after 1800, perhaps about 1802.
Peter and family were still in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1830, possibly with a married child living with them.[9]
On 25 November 1831, Peter sold 85 acres of land on the North Fork of Duck River in Bedford County, Tennessee.[10] There is no mention of his wife in the deed of sale, nor did she sign the deed, suggesting that she may have died before then.
By 1838, Peter was living in Calloway County, Kentucky, where he and Abraham appear on the tax lists.[11]
Death and Burial
Peter is often said to have died in 1840. (A reliable source citation would be nice.) If so, it would have been after 1 June 1840, when he is listed in the 1840 US Census for Calloway County, Kentucky. [4] He most likely would have died in Calloway County, where he lived, and to be buried there as well. It is possible that he was the Peter Rushing who was originally buried in a Rushing Cemetery in the Land Between the Lakes area of Caldwell County, Kentucky, and was relocated to a Rushing Cemetery in Stewart County, Tennessee by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1943.[12][13]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Peter by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
