Father of Alfred Rushton Holden

Born in Bolton. Married in Bolton and had a son Arthur, 1919, then his wife died. He than went to South Africa, date unknown, out of choice, taking his son with him. Elsie Rushton ,who had only corresponded with him beforehand, but may have been engaged to him too, went out there to marry him on 26/2/1921 by special licence in Vereenigning. He had 2 further children, Edith Mary, 1924, and then Alfred Rushton 1926. Edith remembers him as a very kind man.

He worked for the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Company and lived in Germiston, near Johannesburg. He was a victim of the first power station accident in South Africa in 1933 (an electrical explosion in which he was blown out of a transformer room and down a flight of iron stairs). His son Arthur, got into trouble with the police, and his half sister Edith remembers the police coming for him when the family were eating, his stepmother being very upset, and never seeing him again. It is thought that he went to prison. Harry Holden died in 1934 from lung cancer and is buried in Germiston Cemetery. Both his parents were still alive in Bolton when his widow and children returned to England in 1937.
