Biography

Sylvanus' wife was Adelia M. Hyde, who was born in New York state in about 1842. They are purported to have been married in Columbia County, Wisconsin in 1859. Adelia was still in Humboldt County in the 1885 census; it's not known what became of her after that.[1]

United States Census, 1850, Listed as "Sylvenus"[2]

Age is questionable. This 1880 census record showing him born closer to 1840 which may make more sense being closer to the age of his wife. It also shows born in Pennsylvania rather than New York. This also lists that his parents were born in New York. I think we need to find additional sources for parents and siblings for Sylvanus/Sylvenus. Theory that the 1850 database shows age as 16 but possibly is an 10 or 11. Looking at the document the second letter is not absolutely clear. [3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sylvanus by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sylvanus:

Remember Artemus & Patience had a son Artemus (b. abt. 1811) . Who moved to Cascade Iowa. They are on the 1820 US census, in N.Y. There are several more kids than show up in later census. Problem is no names on them, had a heck of a time finding HIM. He Had left home & married . by time Sylvanus was born.

That's great information Robert and would love to know where you got this information? I was doing a lot of searching for them yesterday and especially looking for a last name for Patience/Patiance and came up with nothing new. I wonder if he was working on the railroad that took him down to Dubuque Iowa where he died in 1854. It certainly puts him there at the right time for the railroad. President Fillmore signed into law in 1850 making the Illinois Central the first land-grant railroad in the U.S. In 1853 the had a meeting to organize the Dubuque and Pacific Railroad and in 1855 the construction of the Illinois Central Railroad reached Dunleith (now East Dubuque). He died in 1854.
