Biography

Henry E. Russel was born in Jerusalem, Yates County, New York. He was the son of John and Ruth (Andrews) Russell. On the 1850 census his age was given as 2 years old; his find-a-grave memorial gives his birth date as July 18, 1849. [1] [2]

Henry E. Russell was born in the town of Jerusalem, Yates County, New York, in 1848. Came to this State and county in 1852, moved to Oakland in 1860, and to Allegan in 1863, where he lived until the late rebellion. He enlisted in the 24th Michigan Infantry in 1864, and served [Company I] until the close of the war. After the war he entered the Seminary at Allegan, and received such an education as that institution affords. He left the Seminary in 1869. Taught schools in Allegan up to 1872 when he moved into Kent County. There he taught school in Alpine and Algoma Townships until 1874, when he returned to Macomb. He passed a short time at Memphis, this county, in 1874, and in the winter of that year entered the office of the Press at Mount Clemens. In 1878 he formed a partnership with S. B. Russell [his brother]. He is a practical printer and superintendent of office. Mr. Russell was married to Miss Fanny M. Miller, sister of Lew M. Miller, of Lansing, April 23, 1878. [3]

Henry Russell died April 8, 1906. He is buried in Clinton Grove Cemetery in Clinton Township, Macomb County, Michigan. [4]

As a father, Henry was mentioned in his daughter’s obituaries which appeared in the Daily Monitor Leader (Mt. Clemens, Mich.), September 21, 1935. [5]

Mabelle Russell for over twenty-five years an employee of The Leader was really more than an employee inasmuch as her father in years gone past had been the publisher of the newspaper. She was born of ‘newspaper stock’ and remained true to that tradition of continuance in newspaper work until a few days before her untimely death. . . Her father before her and her uncle the late Spencer B. Russell were both newspaper men.
The ‘Penny Leader,’ a daily newspaper in Mt. Clemens which later became the Mount Clemens Daily Leader, was founded by Miss Russell’s father who was also publisher of the Mount Clemens Press. After his death, his brother, Spencer Russell, Judge James G. Tucker, and Samuel C. Price, father of S.N. Price, present publisher, formed a stock company and purchased The Daily Leader.
