Research Notes

  • Cannot find a Lady Anna (Russell) Vassall using Google search.

Believe she has been confused with Anne Russell, Countess of Warwick who has like birth and death dates.

Comments: inboxrgh 18 September 2016 On my question to the William White Society / Article ( Captain John Vassal 11 ) on the birth of Anna Vassal who was married to John Jones - Notation of Characters http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jones-4316 http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vassall-14 Reference for the following was the contact of the William White Society My reference is from the following Author - Page 15 (http://www.thepilgrimwilliamwhitesociety.org) TPWWS_News-2-2_website_edition.pdf In Adventures of Purse and Person, Virginia 1607 - 1624/5, Volume 3, Families R - Z, p 465. It lists the following as a daughter of Anna Russell (2nd wife) to John Vassall: "7. Anna, born 10 Jan. 1595/6, buried 24 July 1640, married John Jones, rector of St. Nicholas Acons, London, who died 14 May 1636 at Highgate, Middlesex". According to Adventures, Anna's fist daughter was named Judith, bap. 25 March 1582, which makes Anna her second daughter. I should add that the footnote for Anna, b. 10 Jan 1595/6 is the following: R, VA.Co. III, pp. 89, 335 - which stands for The Records of the Virginia Company of London (Washington, 1906-35), 4 v., ed. by Susan Myra Kingsbury. [1]

I can't see evidence for Anna being linked to Cheneys or the Bedford Russells. Also, Jean Vassall was not knighted as far as I can determine.

I trace Anna as a daughter of a yeoman, Henry Russell born in Worcester in 1535 and Milborough Broughton. Henry’s parents were John Russell and Anna Barnardiston. Mylborough was born in Henley, Shropshire in 1538, a daughter of Sir Thomas Broughton.

Henry and Milborough/Mylborough (or Milburgha) married around 1552. Henry bought the site of the Priory of Little Malvern, about 1552 and lived in Little Malvern Priory Court. Henry and Milborough had ten children, including Anne/Anna. I cite https://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/worcs/vol3/pp449-453 for this Russell family. Any thoughts?

John clearly cannot be her father & should be disconnected. Let me know if you have an objection/additional info. Thanks!

p.s. the Find a Grave link returns "memorial not found"

The following source has further information on John's daughter Anne...I believe Anne Russell Vassall should NOT be listed as John's daughter....

http://our-royal-titled-noble-and-commoner-ancestors.com/p3013.htm#i90526 lists John as son of Francis b ca 1549, d. July 1584, father of Anne b 1578, d 8 Apr 1639 who married Sir Henry Somerset, Duke of Somerset Anne is listed as mother of Sir John Somerset

and

John was born in 1553, according to this profile. He is listed as the father of Anne (Russell) Vassall, who was born in 1549! This needs to be re-examined!
