James married Susanna Ellis in the Lochinvar church on 12 June 1878. Their six children were all born at Branxton, the last in 1893. In 1896 James took up farming in the Manilla district, about 300 kms to the north.
Initially they went to Upper Manilla, later to the New Mexico region, and finally to Crescent Hills, Rushes Creek, where Susanna died in December 1919.
James retired from farming two years after Susanna's death when he was about 66, and moved to a house in the Manilla township. He married the widowed Mary Ann Bowman soon after, when she was 53. She and her late husband had been neighbours at Rushes Creek, on a property which her son continued to farm.
James and Mary Ann both died at the Manilla house.
