When James Russell was born in 1819 in Chessington, Surrey, his father, John, was 44 and his mother, Sarah, was 36. He married Anne Ayres on 23 August 1841 in his hometown. They had six children in 17 years. He died on 28 February 1900 having lived a long life of 81 years.
