Biography

Francis Russell was born about 1735 in County Limerick, son of Philip Russell (~1700 - 1763) and Elizabeth Fosbery (~1700 - ).

His brother was William Russell ( - 1794).

Francis Russell (~31) married Elizabeth Maunsell Norris (~21) (~1745 - 1813) on 18 Jul 1766 in in St. John's, Limerick, County Limerick.[1] Their children were:

  1. Philip Russell (1768 - )
  2. Anne Russell (1770 - 1857)
  3. John Norris Russell (~1774 - 1859)
  4. Dr. William Thomas Russell (1777 - ).

From the Limerick Chronicle, Wed 27 Aug 1800.

Died on Monday at his house in Mungret St. Francis Russell, one of the Burgesses of this city.[2]

Francis Russell died on 25 August 1800 and was buried in St. John's Churchyard, John's Square, Limerick City.[3] Francis is commemorated by the following inscription on a limestone mausoleum, dated 1873, but clearly incorporating a much earlier structure:[4]

John Norris Russell erected this monument to the memory of his father Francis Russell who was a tender husband, an affectionate parent, a kind friend and honest man.
Here lieth the mortal remains of Francis Russell who died 25 Aug 1800. He was an affectionate husband and a kind and indulgent parent, a true friend and honest man.[5]

The estate of Francis Russell, burgess of Limerick City, passed probate in 1800 in Ireland.[6]

Research notes

The following notes appear to have been published on the Limerick City Library website:

From Pedigree sketches from the 1808 Limerick Tontine #75 page 16:

Francis Russell = Sarah Cashell -> Edward Poe Russell, 4th son, Age16. Mail-Coach Hotel, Limerick. Subscription paid for by George Francis Russell, Proprietor of the Mail-Coach Hotel, Limerick. Edward’s brother.
Edward Poe, George Francis and John Norris Russell were brothers, therefore their unidentified mother can now be named as Sarah Cashell. The Tontine Schedule required the mother to be identified as wife 1,2 or 3 and if still alive or not. No such information was required about the father. Francis Russell died in 1800 and now we know why George paid the subscription. George died in 1810 aged 30. See Russell Family History in Limerick Local Studies. Francis wed Sarah in 1778.[7]
and
If John Norris Russell is a brother of George Francis and Edward Poe then perhaps the mother of John Norris, Elizabeth Maunsell (Norris) Russell (abt.1745-abt.1813), died before 1778 and the widow of Francis who died in 1813 was Sarah (Cashell) Russell (abt.1757-bef.1828) per the Limerick Chronicle, Wed 19 May 1813:
Died at her daughter’s Mrs Gubbin’s house in George’s St. on Sunday last, Mrs Russell, relict of the late Francis Russell.
And from the Limerick Evening Post of Wed 19 May 1813:
Died last Monday in George’s St. Mrs Russell, widow of Francis Russell and mother of John Norris Russell of this city.
I [Noel Murphy?] think for mother, it could mean step-mother.[2]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Francis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Francis:
